Don't Get Moving Sabotaged!

Home buying and selling is an emotional roller coaster, or is often referred to as such by anyone who has ever gone through the process. Whether you've outgrown your home, got a new job somewhere too far to commute,  want to cash in your hard earned equity, or are simply up for a new adventure, moving can take a toll on your body and your mind and can easily throw a wrench in your healthy lifestyle if you're not prepared.

If you've ever tried to make nutritional or fitness changes to your daily routine, then you know how easy it is to fall off the rails, especially if you are just getting started.

Moving can zap your energy and cause muscles to ache from both physical and emotional strain. In addition to a fatigued body, frequent nights of sleep deprivation can make food preparation seem daunting and more often than not a quick pizza delivery call is a fast and easy option.

When you get down to the nitty gritty of packing, lifting boxes and moving furniture you may not realize how hard you are working your body or how many calories you are actually burning with each task.  Fueling your body with healthy proteins and lots of nutrient rich fruits and vegetables can help keep your wellbeing in check during this stressful time.

Although it is easy to turn to fast food and forego the gym/ excericise routine until you find your new norm, you should know that the tasks you are doing each day can keep you on track despite missing your regular excericise regime.

If you're anything like me, who gets the urge to bake (and eat) when faced with stressful situations, planning ahead for meals and excericise will reduce the risk of "moving sabotage" to your body.

Food
Try to keep items like these nutrient rich foods ready and on hand in your refrigerator during your move:
- Oven Roasted Chicken Breasts
- Cooked Quinoa
- Cut up carrots, peppers, cucumber
- Hummus
- Single serve Greek Yogurts
- Hand fruits (apples, pears, plums, etc.)
- Bagged Salad (choose one low in sugar)
- Multi grain Wraps
- High quality protein powder
- Frozen fruit
- Nuts
- Chilled Water Bottles

Fitness
You may not think about how many steps you are taking with all that running around each day, or how lifting those heavy boxes is just as effective as lifting weights, but with a bit of thought you can stay motivated knowing that you are still on track!

Here is a list of common activities/ "excericises" that we often take part in while moving. Published by Harvard Medical School, the list shows the average caloric expenditure by an adult for each task per hour .

Moving: carrying boxes 260 per hr.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post! To sum up, moving is stressful for all of us no matter how prepared we may try to be. Feeling good about yourself during the process starts with what you eat and how much you move your body to combat stress.
If you have fallen off the rails during your move or if you have found a way to stay on track I'd love to hear from you! Happy Moving!
